CD Description
Formed in New York in 1953 The Drifters were initially conceived as a backing group for lead singer Clyde McPhatter but proved to be more durable than their erstwhile leader. Indeed, The Drifters were still regulars on the British charts during the 1970s, a hit laden spell of more than twenty years. Their initial acclaim came thanks to such cuts as 'There Goes My Baby' and 'Save The Last Dance For Me' with the likes of Ben E King singing lead. He passed the role on to Johnny Moore who helmed their revival in the 1970s when the group recorded in the UK with Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway. In between, The Drifters recorded some of the finest soul music of all time 'There Goes My Baby' in 1959 was the first R&B record to incorporate a string section, later de rigueur for just about every soul record, whilst cuts such as 'Under The Boardwalk' and 'On Broadway' remain perennial favourites.
