Mari Wilson with the Wilsations, Beware Boyfriend, 12

Mari Wilson with the Wilsations, Beware Boyfriend, 12" Single.

Mari Wilson (born Mari MacMillan Ramsey Wilson, 29 September 1957, in Neasden, London), is an English singer, best known for her sometimes quirky, early 1960s influenced pop music songs, and her (former) trademark beehive hairdo.

Recording on the Compact label she scored six UK hit singles in the early 1980s, including her biggest hit, "Just What I Always Wanted" (UK #8) in 1982. The following year she scored a top 30 hit with a cover of "Cry Me a River" and released her debut album Showpeople - also a top 30 hit. In 1985 she performed the song "Would You Dance with a Stranger" for the film of the same name and turned her career towards live performances. Although for a while she distanced herself from her beehive days, she started touring with her old songs again in 2007. In 1992, the album The Rhythm Romance, which combined classic Jazz standards with 60s songs and original material, failed to return her to the charts. She continued performing with jazz bands, and sang the theme-song to the TV sitcom Coupling, "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" and contributed the song "Cry me a River" to the crime drama series McCallum. In 2005 Wilson returned to recording with the album Dolled Up. This was followed by a compilation of her hits, The Platinum Collection to celebrate her 25th anniversary in show business. Apart from pursuing her solo career she toured with Barb Jungr and Clair Martin as the cabaret act, Girl Talk.

She has also performed in musicals, and has been a feature on a BBC TV series about celebrities and their health (she has Type 1 Diabetes).

Her band was colloquially known as The Wilsations and her backing singers were called The Marionettes. Occasional featured artists were Michelle Collins (Cindy from EastEnders), Julia Fordham and bassist 'Thumbs' Cunningham.

Wilson's fourth studio album Emotional Glamour was released on her Beehive label in October 2008.

Mari is a long time resident of Crouch End in North London.

Record Grading

The grading system I use when determining the condition of the vinyl is The 'Record Collectors' Grading System, taken from the Rare Record Price Guide book.

Mint (M) The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Near Mint (NM) The record looks brand new with no scuffing or any deterioration in sound quality and only the smallest hint that its ever been played. The cover and any additional extras are clean, crisp and with no wear whatsoever.

Excellent (EX) The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good (VG) The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good (G) The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair (F) The record is still just about playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

Poor (P) The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

I will not refund you if have not read and understood the grading system I use.

To illustrate my point: if I describe a record as Good (G), it's not brand new or excellent - sound quality has noticeably deteriorated and the cover may be damaged with splits or discoloration.
